Alumni Connect: Tina Han
For Tina, the journey from the classrooms of BWYA to the studios of Carnegie Mellon University has been defined by curiosity, resilience, and a love of learning that extends well beyond academics. A member of the Class of 2021, Tina studied at BWYA from Grade 6 through Grade 12 before heading to the United States to pursue architecture. Five years on, she has just completed her Bachelor of Architecture in Pittsburgh and is preparing to take her next big step—starting her professional career in New York City.
Reflecting on her time at BWYA, Tina describes her school years as full of movement and opportunity. While her time felt busy and sometimes slow in the moment, looking back now, it passed quickly. She holds especially fond memories of the old campus, where many of her most meaningful experiences took place. “All my best memories were there,” she shared, recalling a strong sense of community that shaped her school life.
Outside the classroom, Tina truly thrived. She was deeply involved in extracurricular activities, most notably speech and debate. Tina went on to compete in tournaments, build lasting friendships, and develop confidence as a communicator. One standout memory was her first debate competition in Nanjing, where, despite being new to the activity, she won awards and felt genuinely recognised by her coach and peers.
Another highlight came during United Nations Day in Grade 9. Tina played a leading role in designing a large-scale mural for her homeroom’s Japan-themed display. Drawing on her early passion for architecture, she sketched detailed outlines while her classmates filled in the artwork late into the evening. The effort paid off, earning the class top recognition and creating an unforgettable moment of teamwork and camaraderie.
Academically, Tina credits the IB Diploma Programme with preparing her well for university life. Its emphasis on balance, time management, and perseverance helped her adapt quickly to the demanding pace of college, and later, to the intensity of an architecture programme where many students did not make it to graduation.
Now, with her degree completed, Tina is heading to New York to begin work at an international architecture firm. As she looks ahead, her advice to current students is simple but heartfelt: get involved. “Don’t just focus on classes—join clubs, explore your interests, and make the most of what BWYA has to offer.”
