Alumni Connect: Elina— Exploring Curiosity with Purpose
For Elina, her journey since graduating from BWYA in 2021 has been shaped by curiosity, reflection, and a willingness to explore before settling on a clear direction. Having joined the school in Grade 6, Elina spent six formative years growing academically and creatively—experiences that continue to influence how she approaches learning today

Elina is currently pursuing a master’s degree in biotechnology at the University of Pennsylvania, following her undergraduate studies in biology. Her academic interests focus on molecular and cellular biology, with curiosity around regenerative medicine and cell therapy. While her current path is more defined, Elina describes her journey as one that took time, patience, and exploration across multiple disciplines.
One of her most memorable experiences at BWYA came from stepping outside her comfort zone during the Grade 10 musical, The Sound of Music. Having never seen a musical before joining the school, Elina was inspired by years of student performances and decided to take part when the opportunity arose. Cast as one of the nuns, she embraced the experience wholeheartedly. Weekly rehearsals, collaboration with classmates, and the excitement of performing on stage made it a standout moment in her school life.

Elina also reflects on the challenge of finding balance when interests span science, humanities, and the arts. Rather than rushing to choose, she approached the process thoughtfully—selecting biology as a starting point, exploring courses, and gaining research experience in a lab. Over time, this helped her clarify her interests and build confidence in her chosen field.
Looking back on the IB Programme, Elina admits it was demanding, particularly in the later years. However, she credits it with developing independence, resilience, and strong communication skills that prepared her well for university life.
Her advice to current students is simple and reassuring: explore widely, be open to trying new things, and don’t feel pressured to have everything figured out. For Elina, clarity came not from certainty, but from curiosity and steady progress.
Thanks Elina for taking the time to share your experiences with us!
