    CREATING FUTURE LEADERS

    The Model United Nations (MUN) Club is one of our oldest and most established student organisations, having played a central role in BWYA’s extracurricular offerings for many years.  

    OUR HISTORY

    Our MUN Club has a rich history of participation in conferences across China, actively contributing to the vibrant MUN community in the region. Additionally, since 2006, BWYA has been a proud member of the prestigious THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations) network, regularly participating in the annual THIMUN Singapore conference. This has afforded our students invaluable international experience and exposure to a wider global network of young leaders. 

    At the same time, our club has given back to the MUN community by hosting our annual World Youth MUN (WYMUN) conference. In 2024, the inaugural WYMUN was successfully held, with over 150 participants from more than ten schools in attendance. With a dedicated group of student leaders and directors, the conference fostered fruitful debate and encouraged critical thinking in a new generation of leaders. 

    WHY CHOOSE MUN?

    The MUN Club is more than just an academic activity – it is a dynamic learning opportunity that challenges students to think critically, debate complex topics, and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds. By assuming the roles of diplomats, students engage with pressing world issues such as climate change, international security, and human rights.

    MUN helps students:

    • Build Leadership Skills: By leading committees, proposing resolutions, and mediating negotiations, students develop key leadership abilities such as decision-making, communication, and conflict resolution.
    • Enhance Public Speaking and Debating: MUN offers numerous opportunities for students to improve their public speaking, negotiation, and debating skills, all while gaining confidence in presenting ideas.
    • Expand Global Awareness: Through research, debate, and discussion, MUN participants become well-versed in international relations and global issues, encouraging them to think beyond their immediate surroundings and understand the complexities of the world.
    • Strengthen Nuance and Critical Thinking: MUN helps delegates view global issues through different perspectives, enabling more nuanced thinking when addressing controversial topics like war and resource depletion. This also fosters critical thinking and independence – a crucial lifelong skill.
    • Develop Teamwork and Collaboration: MUN simulates the real-world environment of diplomacy, requiring students to collaborate with others to solve problems and achieve common goals – a skill essential for their future endeavours.

    INTRODUCTION TO WYMUN

    World Youth Model United Nations (WYMUN) is an annual conference proudly initiated, organised, and led by students at BWYA. WYMUN is designed to bring together students from a wide range of schools in Beijing and the surrounding region– including international schools, bilingual schools, and public schools with international programs – for meaningful discussions and debates on pressing global issues. 

    At its core, WYMUN aims to foster an inclusive and diverse environment where participants from different educational backgrounds can collaborate, challenge ideas, and develop mutual understanding through diplomacy. The conference follows the THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations) framework, ensuring a structured, professional, and internationally recognised format that promotes rigorous debate and high-quality resolutions. 

    WHAT MAKES WYMUN UNIQUE?

    What makes WYMUN especially unique is that it is a student-led conference with strong support from faculty in the background. While teachers help ensure the smooth running of certain logistical and administrative aspects, the thematic and organisational core of the conference is entirely student-driven. This includes selecting the conference theme, designing committee topics, training chairs and administrative staff, and organising the volunteer team and WYMUN Howls news team. Through this model, WYMUN empowers students to take initiative, exercise leadership, and gain hands-on experience in planning a large-scale academic event. 

    WYMUN also features its own dedicated press team: the WYMUN Howls. This student-led media group covers the conference in real time, publishing daily articles, committee updates, interviews, and opinion pieces. The WYMUN Howls adds a dynamic journalistic element to the event, documenting delegate experiences and enhancing the overall conference atmosphere. 

    Whether you are a seasoned delegate or new to MUN, WYMUN welcomes you to join a community of young thinkers, leaders, and change-makers. Come engage in global discourse, build lasting connections, and take part in shaping the future.

    SEAN CHAI

    Esteemed directors, fellow student officers, distinguished delegates and honourable guests, 

    I am Zixuan (Sean) Chai, a junior from Beijing World Youth Academy and it is my great pleasure to serve as the Secretary-General for WYMUN 2025.

    I started participating in MUN during the spring of 2024. Looking back, I was astounded by how MUN has improved my public speaking/debating skills and overall confidence. I was also amazed by how MUN allowed me to look at the world through the lens of different perspectives. MUN has helped me improve my awareness of this global community and made me realise how even we, students, can be involved in our world. From a delegate to a student officer, and finally to the secretary general, I’ve enjoyed every part of the journey. 

    Whether you joined MUN to improve your public speaking, meet new people, or just understand the world better, I hope that this conference will serve as a memorable and rewarding one. Welcome to WYMUN 2025! We look forward to seeing you all soon! 

    DONNA LI:

    Honourable directors, distinguished student officers, outstanding delegates, and most esteemed guests, 

    I’m Ruotong (Donna) Li, a sophomore at Beijing World Youth Academy, and I am delighted to serve as your deputy secretary-general for WYMUN. 

    This will be my second year participating in the MUN. I still remember my first conference: at the time, the very thought of delivering a speech made me extremely nervous, and I was confused by all the complex global issues we had to debate. But after the first committee session, after I witnessed heated discussions on international cooperation and sustainable development, I was amazed. In the past 2 years, I have attended numerous conferences, with each one being a unique learning experience. I have delved deep into various topics ranging from the Israeli-Hamas war to urban inequality. Through countless discussions and debates, I discovered my passion for public speaking. Participating in Model United Nations has made me realise that the United Nations, as a global platform, is not only a reflection of our hope of collaboration and overcoming common challenges, but it also involves the complex process of having countries come together and resolve issues. Solving the challenges we face presently is no easy task, though it is of utmost importance. 

      

    I am looking forward to meeting all of you and participating in WYMUN  2025! Let’s come together, share our ideas, make changes, and make this an unforgettable chapter in your MUN-journey.

    CODE OF CONDUCT

    WYMUN delegates are expected to act as diplomats, representing their countries and schools with high standards of personal behaviour. Schools are encouraged to select students carefully to avoid disciplinary issues, ensuring that delegates maintain the reputation of both WYMUN and their institutions. 

    As the conference takes place in the People’s Republic of China, delegates must respect local laws and customs. Politically sensitive remarks or behaviour will not be tolerated. BWYA’s MUN Directors and Secretariats reserve the right to make the final decision regarding any and all violations, as deemed appropriate.
