Beijing World Youth Academy (BWYA)

Introduction
BWYA is a Chinese non-profit independent secondary school, approved by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission to enroll local and overseas students aged 11 to 20 in 2000. The school is awarded IB DP authorization in 2001.

BWYA has two campuses: High International School at No.18 Huajiadi Beili, Chaoyang District and Junior International school, at No.210, Gaojiayuan Xiaoqu, Chaoyang District.

BWYA is under the lead of the headmistress directed by the Board of Directors. There are three principals responsible for the administration of three single sections (Chinese section and English section with IBDP and International school implementing IBMYP).

BWYA has over 400 students and 110 staff from about 40 countries, spreading in the separated campuses to learn Chinese curricula or English curricula, which has formed an international body and each member of this body contributes to the school’s atmosphere of internationalism and cultural tolerance.

Facilities
BWYA has created stimulating study environments to provide for the varying needs of our students and that reflect the specialist requirements of each of our subjects.

BWYA is well-equipped with modern facilities: for all major science subjects; for information technology and computing; for catering and services; and for sport, music and the performing arts. The library and the multimedia centre provide vital support for each individual.

Staff
Teachers come from different parts of the world. Over 90% have achieved the Certificate for Advanced Teaching. They bring with them an accumulated wealth of experience from different schools and fields. 15% staff are older teachers who have a wealth of teaching experience, 35% are middle aged teachers who are in their prime, and about 50% are energetic and enthusiastic young teachers.

We have great respect and interest in the customs of different countries. Our vast experience in teaching foreign students has been useful to inspire our students to progress along the path of their predecessors who bloomed under our careful tutelage.

Staff in BWYA are comparatively stable. Experienced IB teachers (through practice in BWYA become experienced) devoted to the IBDP. Most teachers extend their contract and frequently make proposals or suggestions for the development of the school.

Curriculum
BWYA has curricula of international, intercultural and interdisciplinary.
I. IB Diploma Programme for senior students aged 16 to 19
II. International Curriculum for junior high students aged 11 to 15
III. ESL(for students whose English skills need to be improved)
IV. Chinese Curriculum for foreign students aged 11 to 19
V. Chinese as Foreign Language Course for students aged11 to 19

Variety of School Life
We attach great importance to our students’ holistic development. CAS (creativity, action and service) is compulsory to all students. We organize Chinese cultural field trips, enabling students to appreciate the vast historical and cultural heritage of China. We have a student union (elected by the students themselves) that provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership and organizational skills. We have various clubs to raise the students’ awareness of community needs and elective lessons to give students opportunities to apply what they have learned in the classroom, such as Cooking, Knitting, Music instruments, Chinese Painting, Carving, Chess and Computer programming etc.

Expectations
In the past five years, IBDP has grown rapidly in BWYA, Candidates’ number has grown from 3 in 2003 to 35 in 2008. We are having over 140 IB students in the school. The benefit for the Chinese local students to do IBDP is that they are able to study in the international climate without going abroad and have the equal opportunities to enjoy the world-recognized diploma programme with expatriate classmates from all over the world.

BWYA has 528 graduates since 2003. IB graduates have all achieved their goals. They have been admitted to the top universities in the world. In 2003, Snezhana Zlatinova, one of our first IB graduates with final result of 44, was admitted by Harvard university with full scholarship. Another IB graduate of 2004, Rebecca Gong with result of 42, was also admitted by Harvard with full scholarship. Metodi, the 2005 IB graduate with result of 43, was admitted to Princeton with merit scholarship. Chinese IB graduates have all received the admission from top universities as Toronto, UBC, London Art University and Chicago in US.
